Shirley Chisholm has always been one of my heroes. In 1972, when she ran for the Democratic nomination for president, she faced opposition from both the white and male political establishments. Even my diehard Republican mother told me at the time how much she admired Shirley. I had never heard my mother speak positively of a Democrat!
George Wallace, an avid segregationist, also ran for the Democratic nomination that year. On May 15, Wallace was shot in Laurel, Maryland, and paralyzed from the waist down.
On Jun 8, Rep. Chisholm visited Wallace in Holy Cross Hospital to wish him well. Wallace wept. And later he supported many of Chisholm's congressional efforts to help working-class Americans.
THIS is the America I want. THIS is what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris can help us restore. Four more years of Donald Trump will destroy any moral center we have left.
